Cage-free Commitments

As part of Animal Law Reform South Africa’s Corporate Accountability Programme, we have been engaging with selected companies to improve the lives of animals, specifically egg laying hens in South Africa.

Part of this engagement involves securing pledges (commitments) that these companies will not sell eggs from hens kept in cruel battery cages.

These “cage-free commitments” are an important step towards recognising that animals have interests that deserve to be protected, and that companies have duties towards animals in their supply chain.

We believe animals are sentient beings with intrinsic value and should not be kept in cages. We therefore recognise these promises as important progress. They signal to consumers, the public, the government, the private sector, and other stakeholders, that we CAN and SHOULD do better for animals!

As the list of companies undertaking such commitments grows, so does public awareness, and in turn, important changes are triggered within South African supply chains. Ultimately, this helps advance protection for millions of hens, with knock on implications for other animals in our country. Below contains a list of the companies that have made a public cage-free commitment after engaging with ALRSA.
